Yabuli Sun Mountain / Heilongjiang

Yabuli ist the oldest ski resort in China and organised the internationl University winter games in 2006. Yabuli is located in China's northeastern Heilongjiang Province between the cities Harbin and Mudangjiang. Equipped with a POMA 6 person cable car and a magic carpet in the lower part, Yabuli is smaller than Wanlong, Beidahu or Changbaishan, as mostly the left part of the mountain closed and only the slopes A1 to A7 (see trail map below) are opend to the public. Slope A1 is good for advanced beginners whereas the slopes A2 to A7 more sutiable for advanced skiers are. Totally the slopes cover a length of around 15km on a vertcal drop of less than 400 meters.
While the upper section is good for advanced skiers, the inclination of the lower part is perfect for beginners, however, mostly after lunch, due to the permanent wind, the slopes get quickly icy. Temperatures range from "comfortable" (-15 to -20 C) over "chilly" (-20 to -30 C) to "unbearable" (-35C and colder), not considered the wind chill factor. Only in March temperatures slowly get comfortable.

Yabuli offers a wide range of accommodation possibilities starting from 2* Hotels for 300 RMB per night over 3-4* level to the 5* Hotel of Club Med. However, despite the comfort and the all-inclusive service, the rates of Club Med are hartd to digest and only for skiers with a big wallet. Besides, despite the international focus of Club Med, they also don't offer ski lessons (which are included in the price) in any other language than Chinese. Yabuli has another 5* Hotel which is completely focused on Chinese clients.
Teh rental equipment consist mostly of Atomic skis and SnowboardsDas Mietmaterial besteht hauptsächlich aus Atomic Carving Ski und Snowboards.

To get to Yabuli you need to either take train or flight to Harbin or Mudangjiang and then drive for 4 hours to the resort. For travelers who want to see the Ice Festival in Harbin, Yabuli is defintiely an option, but the ski resorts around Beijing offer better and more slopes in a more friendly climate.
