Graduated from Tel-Aviv University in mass communication and film studies, Bar-Gal worked in the Israeli TV as a director of short documentary current-affairs stories and TV news cameraman. In the summer of 2001 Bar-Gal came to Shanghai to document the awaking empire and stayed in his new home town ever since. Soon after arrival to Shanghai Bar-Gal began journalistic investigations in search for the lost Shanghai’s Jewish cemeteries. His research became a decade long mission to unearth and save the lost Shanghai Jewish graves and to bring the gravestones he collected to a befitting place of memory. Bar-Gal studies in the subject matter and his personal activities in attempt to preserve the forgotten Jewish heritage of Shanghai were documented and covered by various electronic and printed media world-wide. Since 2003 Bar-Gal leads the daily "Shanghai Jewish Heritage Tour"; a 4 hours long, in-depth insight into the extraordinary Jewish history of China’s most cosmopolitan city. The tour covers the city’s history and the unique Jewish presence since the opium war of the 1840’s to the Communist revolution in 1949.
