Peter Achten, born 1939 in Basel / Switzerland has been a journalist since 1967 and has been living and working in Beijing since more than 25 years. He started his career as a local redactor with Swiss "National-Zeitung" and "Basler Nachrichten" and he later worked as a radio correspondent in Madrid / Spain. 1974 he changed to the Swiss National TV where he became anchor, producer and a member of the redaction. Since 1986 he has been working as Far East correspondent for the Swiss National Radio with offices in Hanoi, Hong Kong and Beijing. From 1990 to 1994 he was USA correspondent for the Swiss National TV with office in Washington DC. From 1997 to 1999 he was Chief Representative for Ringier, Switzerland’s largest publishing house, in Vietnam. From 1999 to 2008 Peter Achten was Asia correspondent for the Swiss National Radio, for publications from Ringier and he was also chief redactor of the economical magazine “China International Business”. Spectacular were his reports about the the Tiananmen incident in spring 1989, the Tsunami in Banda Acah in 2004 and the 2008 cyclone in Burma. Today Peter Achten works as a freelance Asia correspondent in Beijing.
